Are you aware that our ability to retain the hair we have worked so hard to grow has a lot to do with our hair accessory choices? Today’s post covers the benefits of using silk and highlights how I use my silk beanie.
Silk reigns supreme over any fiber or fabric that is available to use on our hair. Unlike accessories made of cotton and satin, silk does not draw moisture out of the hair and dry it out. When hair is dry, it breaks and breaking hair greatly impacts hair retention. Instead, silk nourishes the hair through the presence of the natural proteins found within silk fibers. Therefore, it helps us to retain moisture in our hair which in turn helps hair retention.
I know many will argue that satin works just fine and that’s true. However, silk works better. When using a silk head covering, my hair is at its best. I experience less frizz, more hydration and my hair gives off a shinier appearance. Let’s face it, anything offering less frizz is a huge benefit to a transitioner. These benefits are not present when using satin, cotton or other fibers and fabrics.
Silk vs. Satin
I tried to select two photos with a similar hairstyle as a comparison. The first photo is with using a silk scarf and the second photo is with using a satin scarf. While I have some frizz in the first photo, I believe it to be less than the second. And, my hair is far my hydrated.
Silk Beanie Cap Benefits
Because of the many benefits that silk has to offer, I’ve wanted to get my hands on a silk beanie cap for a while now. I’ve been using a wig cap made of spandex and that has been working well but I know silk would be better. I’ve had my eye on the Pretty AnntoiNet collection for over a year but I’ve been holding out for a black silk beanie cap. Unfortunately, Pretty AnntoiNet never restocked them in black so I selected brown.
Below are some of the benefits that Pretty AnntoiNet lists for the silk beanie cap:
- 100% natural UNLIKE synthetic charmeuse satin.
- Best fiber that can be used on hair.
- Breathable, durable and comfortable.
- Hypoallergenic and contains the natural proteins and essential
amino acids commonly found in the body.
- Non-absorbent and will not dry out your hair.

Have You Thought About Getting a Silk Lined Beanie Cap, Bonnet or Scarf?
Pretty AnntoiNet Silk Beanie$25.00
- COST. However, I consider $25 reasonable for silk but I respect that everyone will feel that way.
- COLOR. I really want black and hope she will restock them at some point since I will wear it under my wigs. Otherwise, color selections are sufficient.
