Are you looking for a moisturizer for your dry, transitioning hair? Moisturizing transitioning hair can be tricky. Natural hair requires moisture; line of demarcation requires protein; and relaxed hair can go either way. Then there’s…if the moisturizer is too light, the natural hair will be dry yet if the moisturizer is too thick and heavy, the relaxed hair will be stick straight and appear weighed down. What gives?
Moisturizing Transitioning Hair!
If you Google moisturizers for transitioning hair, you will find the options are far and wide. Naturally Curly offers a great list that you can find here.
Before running out and grabbing the next best thing, try shopping your stash! You might find you have a product that already works. Many of us buy handmade products that are geared toward naturals so as our hair transitions from relaxed to natural, our product selection could very well remain the same! Don’t believe the hype that a moisturizer is for naturals only, relaxed hair only or transitioners only. It’s marketing! You should use whatever your hair responds to best.
Become a DIYer!
Perhaps you cannot find what you need in your stash, why not whip up a little this or that to create a daily refresher for your hair. Simply combine some of your product favorites in a spray bottle and let the magic begin. Unless you’re adding preservatives to make the concoction last longer, you should make small batches and store it in a cool, dark place. You should always use good judgement but I would toss the mixture after 4 to 6 days. If it doesn’t look right or smell right, toss it!

My Current Top 3 Moisturizers!
I have tried many products along this journey, some good and some bad. Here I share my top performing moisturizers for transitioning hair.
Naturalista Cosmetics Moisturizer / Leave In Conditioner
I received a small sample of Naturalista Cosmetics Moisturizer in my Hattache Black Friday order and oh-em-gee! It is nothing short of amazing! It has a soft, frothy consistency and spreads easily from root to tip. It penetrates fully and quickly delivering moisture to my natural hair, relaxed hair and line of demarcation that joins the two. The scent is fruity, much like fruit punch. Yum!
BelNouvo Deep Quench Moisture Butter
The Bel Nouvo Deep Quench Moisture Butter* is a water based moisturizer with the consistency of a thick butter (similar to shea butter texture) which quickly and easily melts in the palm of your hands. It spreads evenly and doesn’t leave residue or cause buildup. It softens upon contact and offers lasting moisture in the days to come. My relaxed hair loves this moisturizer equally as much as my natural hair. Available in multiple scents. I purchased vanilla buttercreme.
Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Hold and Shine Moisture Mist
Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Hold and Shine Moisture Mist is the most hydrating spray moisturizers I’ve tried to date. It is a great daily refresher for braids, buns and other protective styles. It’s highly effective, even in the winter.
There are tons of moisturizers out there that will get the job done. These are just moisturizers my hair is loving at the present. No matter what moisturizer you select, it should at a minimum, make your hair feel like a million bucks or it’s not the right moisturizer for your hair.
