The protective style challenge that Jen [Just Grow Already] and I have going is coming to a close in just a few days. I love protective style challenges because they are easy for me to accomplish since I practically protective style all the time. For those new to this hair journey or new to my blog, I have co-hosted a protective style challenge for the entire month of August where I have posted protective style looks or tips every Monday to keep you inspired. Today’s post features me and a few others as we share how to moisturize protective styles.

Dre of So She Writes says, since I’m basically wearing wigs (and an occasional bun or two) during the challenge, my tip would be…Continue to nurture YOUR hair. Keep it clean, conditioned and moisturized. Also, give yourself an invigorating scalp massage with an essential oil + carrier oil mix, as it promotes growth.
Pokua says, I mix water and a leave in conditioner, and put in an applicator tip bottle for easy access to my roots.
— How to Moisturize Protective Styles —
I keep my regimen pretty simple when in a protective style but note, simple does not mean neglect. Hair neglect is a one way ticket to tangles, breakage and frustration. Keeping it simple by my definition includes moisturizing and sealing when needed and keeping my hair protected at night with a silk scarf or bonnet. Tomi @ Tomes Edition said it best a few days ago when she commented – “Alot of people take care of protective styles better than their own hair. They often neglect their hair underneath the protective style.” Both your hair and your protective style needs love so be sure to take care of both.

Moisturize: A quick and easy way on how to moisturize protective styles is shown in my How to Moisturize Protective Styles video below. Incorporating the use of a moisture based spray will keep your protective style well hydrated. Although I sample various products and feature Alikay Naturals Lemongrass Leave In Conditioner in the video, my ultimate favorite spray moisturizer is the Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Hold and Shine Moisture Mist [like seriously, why does that name have to be so long?].
My moisturizing intervals vary based on what my hair needs. I will sometimes moisturize twice daily (morning and night) and other times I will only moisturize at night. I prefer to moisturize my hair before taking a shower so that steam from the shower can help boost the moisture and effectiveness of my moisturizer much like a hair steamer would do.
Seal: I often will seal my hair once every few days. My goal is to keep my hair protected without causing oily hair or product buildup. Sealing daily is optional right now since weather conditions do not require daily sealing. When the temperatures are cooler, daily sealing becomes mandatory. Know your hair and environmental conditions is the point here.
The video demonstrates how I seal my hair. I either use a few drops of oil and gently pat it on my hair. Or, I will use an oil mist and give my hair a light spray of oil. I add a few drops of oil underneath my bun every few days to keep the dry, itchy, flaky scalp away.
