This post provides an overview on how to co-wash relaxed hair. You will also learn how to detangle new growth while minimizing breakage on both dry (pre-wash) and damp (post-wash) hair.
How to Co-Wash Relaxed Hair
What is Co-Washing?
Co-washing is short for “conditioner washing” and consists of cleansing your hair with your favorite moisturizing conditioner instead of shampoo. Co-washing replenishes moisture and hydration without stripping the hair. I reserve co-washing for wash days when time is limited and/or increased hydration is needed.
My Co-Wash Regimen
- pre-poo with extra virigin coconut oil [or other oil of choice]
- deep condition on dry hair for 30 minutes [with Hot Head Deep Conditioning Cap]
- co-wash with a slippery conditioner [to assit with detangling]
Best Co-Wash Conditioners for Relaxed Hair
- Aussie Moist Miraculously Smooth
- As I Am Co-Wash
- TRESemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture Conditioner
These three conditioners offer hydration and great slip which helps in-shower detangling. I wash in braids so al l of my detangling is done out of the shower.

How Often Do You Co-Wash?
Aussie Moist is amazing product for co-washing. Tons of great information Jay!
Tomes Edition recently posted…Strong Protein Wash Day…
Hello Gorgeous! TY
I try not to use any oil when co-washing because I can never get the conditioner to remove the oil. But I do pre-poo before using a shampoo. Thanks for sharing, Jay. Happy Thanksgiving, love!
Oh yes, I understand. Rinsing my hair with warm water removes the oil. Rinsing my hair in cool water causes the oil to get waxy. I rinse in warm first until all oil is removed and then follow that up with a cool water rinse. Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving!
Ill have to revisit Aussie Moist Conditioner for co-washing. These days I only use their deep conditioner.
Which deep conditioner do you like? Finish strong this week.
Thanks for the info. I hadn’t thought of deep conditioning first.
You’re so very welcome.
Hotoil six protein treatment is good.use every 2 week
I think I might have used that a time or two. Have you been using it for a while?
