I had the pleasure of traveling out of town to hang with family. This also meant pure hair neglect. The weather was horrible (cold) and I hid under my ScarFanatic Beanie the entire time. I knew I was wrong for this level of neglect seeing how I had been neglectful the entire week. I knew wash day would not be kind to me and right I was.
What horror! We arrived home late Saturday night. I attempted detangling. Mistake! I was tired and never should have given detangling any thought. To complicate matters, my hair was clumped together at the root. After many broken strands, I got fed up. I spritzed with Hawaiian Silky 14 in 1, baggyed and crawled in bed, hoping for a different outcome the following day.
Pre-Wash Detangling Continued:
Although I love Hawaiian Silky 14n1, it did not work magic overnight. I ended up having to whip out Mane ‘ Tail Detangler. My hair was gummy with product buildup. So gummy in fact, it was the main cause of the clumping. Every manipulation resulted in breakage. Aargh! My hair wasn’t as detangled as I would like but I couldn’t risk more breakage. I braided my hair in 3 sections (1 on left, 1 on right & 1 in back) and moved to step 2 – pre-poo.
I was so worn out from detangling, rounds 1 and 2, that I chose to go the easy route. I drenched my hair in maple smelling goodness, Fenugreek tea. I then layered Aubrey Organics Honey Suckle Rose on top. I steamed with my LCL standup steamer for 20 minutes. Oh and, while Fenugreek offered great slip, my hair was just too tangled to reap full benefit.
I co-washed with Curls Coconut Sublime. This was my first time using it. I think I like! I’ll have to get a review posted soon.
LOC: water, Dabur coconut oil and Pura Body Naturals MuruMuru Moisture Milk
I start the air dry process with tshirt drying for 1 hour – this absorbs the excessive drippies. I started detangling at 90% dry – oh what continued horror! I’ll edit out all the frustrating details. Let’s just say, this wash day wasn’t a hit based on tangling and breakage. Don’t let the photos fool you — it took a lot out of me to get my hair photo ready.
I always assess the situation after a miss, be it product or technique. I can spot the reason a mile away in this case – on a good week, I cannot go days without combing. This is magnified when 9 weeks post. I was running on fumes all last week trying to keep afloat with life, work and blog. In the midst, something was neglected, and that something was my hair. I seriously need to get it together because the last time I played the game of neglect, I ended up having to chop some matted locks because my hair got all tangly. Going forward, I will keep the hair properly combed with lightly combing both morning & night (which is my norm) to ensure the strands stay nice and smooth and not coiled around each other! I will also forgo using Fenugreek tea for a while just to make sure it is not secretly causing an issue.
Hopefully you’re recent wash day was a lot better than mine. Deets Plz!
